In 1986, RSG was founded by Dartmouth professors Tom Adler, Colin High, and Dennis Meadows. The three set up a small shop in Vermont and immediately secured their first major project conducting air modeling as part of a traffic study for Rutland Mall.

Eight years later, in 1994, the company’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan was created for 15 employees. Today, RSG has more than 80 employee owners and has been 100% owned by its ESOP since 2009.

“Since 1986, we have combined academic rigor with serious data analysis and computer modeling,” the company stated in an online post in October 2021. “Through the dedication of our employee-owners, we have evolved into an innovative consultancy. Our work now helps clients understand why people and systems do what they do and guides their decision-making.”

In addition to transportation planning and forecasting analysis, RSG offers expertise in areas such as survey-based research, freight modeling, noise control engineering, software development, public lands planning, and more.

“As an employee-owned company, each colleague respects their responsibility to build a financially, socially, and environmentally sustainable company,” the company states on its website. “We are an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) organization, and we openly share the company’s financial performance and strategic directions as well as profit. Being an ESOP allows us to focus on interesting, fun, and impactful work, even if it doesn’t always optimize the bottom-line.”

“The benefits of an ESOP mean our employee-owners are more invested in our collective success,” said Mark Fowler, who is a director and ESOP trustee at RSG. “It is an essential part of our culture.
