On October 21st, the VEOC will be presenting at an ongoing series of workshops put on by the Incubator without Walls project at Lyndon State College. "Selling to the Employees: Employee Ownership as a Path for Business Succession" will include a brief overview of ownership succession options and will outline the pros and cons of different forms of employee ownership and the key financial and organizational benefits of this approach.

The VEOC is offering a new intermediate-level workshop entitled “ESOPs and Business Succession: A Closer Look” on November 5th from 2:30 to 5:00 pm in Montpelier. The workshop is designed for those who already have some familiarity with Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs).

Special guests include Rick Gile, founder of Kalow Technologies, who will tell the story of Kalow’s transition to ESOP ownership. Attorney Steve Magowan of Steiker, Fischer, Edwards & Greenapple will discuss the intricacies of the ESOP structure, financing possibilities, and the steps leading up to an ESOP transaction. He will also discuss the current financing market for ESOP transactions and show various other ways companies can use ESOPs to achieve their goals.

The workshop is co-sponsored by the Vermont Department of Economic, Housing and Community Development, the Central Vermont Economic Development Corporation, the Central Vermont Chamber of Commerce, and the Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund.

A free workshop entitled “Selling to the Employees: Employee Ownership as a Path for Business Succession” will be held on December 1st from 2:00 to 4:30 pm in Rutland.

Joining the VEOC will be Bill Carris, Vermont State Senator and former owner of Carris Reels, a Rutland-based manufacturing company that became 100% employee-owned in 2008. Carris will explain why he decided to sell his family business to the employees, the steps involved in the process, and how the new ownership structure has affected the company, the employees, and the community at large.

The workshop is co-sponsored by the Vermont Small Business Development Center and the Rutland Economic Development Corporation.
